Salt Water Swimming Pool System FAQ
There are many misconceptions about saltwater pools, including the belief that they are chlorine-free. Below, we answer common questions about saltwater systems and explain how Clear Comfort’s hydroxyl-based Advanced Oxidation Process works alongside chlorine or salt systems to provide effective sanitation with the lowest chlorine levels possible.
Is a saltwater or saline pool system chlorine-free?
No. A saltwater pool still uses chlorine—it simply produces it differently. Instead of manually adding chlorine, a saltwater sanitation system, also called a salt chlorine generator, converts dissolved salt into chlorine.
How does saltwater sanitize a pool?
Salt alone does not sanitize pool water. Saltwater systems sanitize by generating chlorine, which provides the disinfectant residual needed to control most common contaminants.
How does a saltwater pool system work?
A saltwater system uses electrolysis to convert chloride ions from dissolved salt into chlorine. The chlorine then sanitizes the water in much the same way as chlorine added manually.
Because the system continually generates chlorine, a saltwater pool is still a chlorinated pool.
Can saltwater damage a pool?
Saltwater can contribute to corrosion and deterioration when water chemistry, materials or equipment are not properly managed. Metal components, natural stone, concrete, plaster and surrounding equipment may be particularly vulnerable.
The level of risk depends on the pool’s construction, materials, water chemistry and maintenance practices.
What does it take to maintain a saltwater pool?
Saltwater pools still require regular water testing and chemistry management, including monitoring:

Salt systems can also contribute to rising pH, requiring periodic adjustment. The salt cell must be inspected and cleaned as scale accumulates.
Why reduce chlorine dependence?
Chlorine is an effective and widely used pool disinfectant, but relying on it alone can require higher residual levels and more frequent chemical adjustments.
When chlorine reacts with contaminants introduced by swimmers, it can form chloramines. Chloramines are associated with the strong “chlorine” smell, irritated eyes and skin, and respiratory discomfort—particularly around indoor pools.
Chlorine also does not quickly control every contaminant. For example, the chlorine-resistant parasite Cryptosporidium can survive for days in properly chlorinated pool water.
How low can chlorine levels go with Clear Comfort?
Clear Comfort’s hydroxyl-based AOP works alongside an existing chlorine or saltwater system to reduce the amount of chlorine needed to maintain clear, healthy water.
Residential pools can typically maintain a low chlorine residual of approximately 0.5–1.0 ppm, depending on pool conditions, usage and local requirements. That is below the chlorine levels commonly maintained in traditional chlorine and saltwater pools and is comparable to—or below—the residual found in many municipal drinking-water systems.
Commercial and public pools must always maintain the chlorine residual required by applicable health codes.
What is the alternative to relying on chlorine alone?
Clear Comfort provides an alternative to chlorine-dependent pool treatment—not necessarily a completely chlorine-free pool.
The system uses Hydroxyl-Based AOP to create powerful oxidizers that help neutralize contaminants throughout the water. It does not generate chlorine and works alongside a low chlorine residual to:
